John J. Scanlon

NEW HARTFORD -- John J. Scanlon, 69 of 13 Compton Rd., New Hartford died on Wednesday in Faxton Hospital.

He was born in 1907 in Syracuse, son of the late John A. and Mary Agnes Donovan Scanlon.

Graduated from Assumption Academy, Utica. In 1930 he graduated from Tri State University with a mechanical engineering degree.

He was employed by the Grinnell Co., specializing in industrial piping. After his father's death in 1961? he returned to Utica and took over his father's business specializing in high pressure boilers and industrial piping. In 1943 he enlisted in the Navy receiving the Commission of Lieutenant J. G. in the Naval Engineering Corp. He was discharged in 1951 as a Lieutenant Commander. He was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering, Navy League of the U.S. Naval Reserve Civilian Advisory Council, American Legion Post No. 1476. Tri State University Alumni Association, Utica Council No. 189 Knights of Columbus, St. John's Roman Catholic church of Utica and its Holy Name Society, former member of the Yahnundasis Golf Club.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Ditzel Scanlon, who he married in 1941, three nieces, a sister, Mrs. Helen Scanlon Eck died January 23, 1977.

Funeral Saturday at the Stevens Funeral Home, 13 Oxford Road, New Hartford and at 10:00 at St. John's Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered. Internment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
