
Alfred Walrath, retired Syracuse merchant and a native and former resident of Chittenango, died suddenly at his home
in Syracuse Thursday. he was stricken suddenly after enjoying the day in apparently good health with his family. Surviving
are his wife, who was, before her marriage, Sophia Velasko of this village, and a son, William and a daughter, Carrie
Walrath, of Syracuse, and a brother, Daniel Walrath, of Chicago, Ill. Announcement of Mr. Walrath's death reached Mr. and
Mrs. Wells Walrath, cousins, of this village, Friday morning. Friday afternoon the son and daughter came to Chittenango and
completed arrangements for burial. Funeral services will be held at the home 1722 South Salina street, Syracuse, at 11
o'clock Monday morning, with Rev. Doublewait of All Saints' Episcopal Church of Syracuse, officiating. The body will be
brought here immediately after the Syracuse service for burial in Oakwood. Rev. J.M. Van Tilburg, pastor of the Presbyterian
Church of this village, officiating at the grave.
Alfred Walrath was born in Chittenango June 26, 1849. His parents were Joseph and Elizabeth Walrath. He married
Sophia Velasko. After a few years he moved to Syracuse and had been a resident of that city for fifty-five years until
the time of his death. Until twelve years ago, when he retired, he operated a grocery store on Warren street, one of the
largest and best-known stores in the city. Mr. Walrath was a frequent visitor in Chittenango and was known to many of its
older residents. News of his death was received with deep regret.
