PENN YAN, April 23 -- On Wednesday, April 21, at Penn Yan, after a brief but painful illness, occurred the death of Rev.
A.J. Walrath, pastor of the Baptist church. Stricken down a few days since with bilious fever, in spite of the best of
medical skill and of care, the final result seemed inevitable almost from the first.
Rev. Adoniram Judson Walrath was born 46 years ago at Evan Mills, Jefferson county, where he spent his boyhood days and
where his aged parents still reside. Consecrating his life to the Christian ministry, to better prepare himself for his
work, he entered Madison (now Colgate) university in 1873, graduating four years later. His first charge was at Madison,
where he remained for seven years, his pastorate being one of great success. His subsequent charges at Homer five years,
and later at Troy , were also most successful. Accepting the call to the Baptist church of this place five years ago this
spring, he had since lived in our midst, enjoying the respect and love of all who knew him: beloved not only by his own
church, where he had served its longest pastorate, but also by his fellow townsmen generally who appreciated his sterling
character and his high ideals of citizenship. Able as a scholar and speaker, Mr. Walrath was also an ideal husband and
father and one who will be sorely missed.
The deceased was a member of the I.O.O.F. and also a 32d degree Scottish rite mason.
Besides his aged parents and his wife, six children survive, Mrs. J. Everett Hall of Erie, Pa., Ada A., Edward, Alice,
Fred and Gertrude, all of PennYan. The funeral occurs on Sunday at the Baptist church under charge of the I.O.O.F., the
sermon to be delivered by Professor W. H. Maynard, D.D., of Colgate university.
